What Happens at a Travel Consultation

Itinerary & Risk Review

Your physician reviews every destination, region, and activity on your trip, including transit stops, rural vs. urban areas, and time of year. Risk varies dramatically by these factors and we account for all of them.

Health History Assessment

Your current medications, immune status, pregnancy, age, and prior vaccinations all affect which vaccines you can receive and which prophylactic medications are right for you. We review everything.

Personalized Health Plan

You leave with a complete travel health plan: vaccines administered, prescriptions for malaria prophylaxis or traveler's diarrhea antibiotics, and written guidance on mosquito protection, food and water safety, and what to do if you get sick abroad.

Documentation

We provide your International Certificate of Vaccination (Yellow Card) if applicable, and a summary of your travel health visit, useful if you need to present vaccination records at a border or to your travel insurer.

What to Bring

  • Your passport or travel documents showing destination(s)
  • Your complete itinerary including transit countries
  • Prior vaccination records if available
  • A list of current medications and dosages
  • Your insurance card
  • Any prior Yellow Card (ICVP) certificates

Don't have your records? Don't let that stop you from booking. We can work from what you remember and check available databases.

Every Type of Traveler, Every Destination

First-Time International Travelers

Heading abroad for the first time? We walk you through everything you need to know: what vaccines are required vs. recommended, what to pack in your medical kit, and how to find care if something goes wrong.

Business & Frequent Travelers

Frequent travel to the same regions? We maintain your vaccine records and standing prescriptions so you're never scrambling before a last-minute trip. Annual reviews keep everything current.

Adventure & Remote Travelers

Trekking, safari, diving, or expeditions far from medical infrastructure require thorough preparation. We build comprehensive travel medical kits and prepare you for environments without easy access to care.

Families & Children

Pediatric vaccine schedules and age-appropriate malaria dosing require specialist knowledge. We advise families traveling with infants and young children to destinations that require extra preparation.

Immunocompromised Travelers

Travelers on immunosuppressants, biologics, or with HIV need careful vaccine selection, as live vaccines may be contraindicated. Our infectious disease specialist tailors every recommendation to your specific immune status.

Pregnant & Nursing Travelers

Malaria in pregnancy carries serious risk. We advise on destination safety, which vaccines are safe during pregnancy, and which prophylactic medications can be used when breastfeeding.

Last-Minute Travel
Consultations in NYC

Not everyone has six weeks to prepare. If you're leaving in days - or even tomorrow - call us. We see last-minute travelers regularly and are experienced at prioritizing what matters most when time is short.

Same-Day Vaccines

Many vaccines can be given on the day of your visit and provide meaningful protection even for imminent travel. We stock all major travel vaccines on-site, no waiting for orders or pharmacy pickup.

Instant Prescriptions

Malaria prophylaxis, standby traveler's diarrhea antibiotics, and altitude sickness medication can all be prescribed at your visit. Atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone) starts just 1–2 days before travel.

Prioritized Risk Assessment

When time is short, knowing what to prioritize is critical. We focus on the highest-impact interventions for your specific destinations, not every possible vaccine, but the right ones for your trip.

Yellow Fever Certificate

If your destination requires a Yellow Fever certificate for entry, you must have it before boarding. As a certified Yellow Fever vaccination site, we can administer the vaccine and issue your official Yellow Card.

Travel Medical Kit

We advise on and prescribe a destination-specific travel medical kit, so you're prepared to treat common travel illnesses on your own if you're far from care.

Travel Consultation FAQ

How far in advance should I book?

Ideally 4–6 weeks before departure. Some vaccines require multiple doses spaced weeks apart, and others take time to reach full effectiveness. That said, even a visit one week before travel is far better than no visit - call us and we'll work with the time available.

Is a travel consultation the same as getting vaccines?

Not exactly. A consultation includes a physician review of your itinerary and health, a personalized risk assessment, and a travel health plan. Vaccines are often administered at the same visit, but the consultation itself is a medical appointment, not just a vaccine clinic.

How long does a consultation take?

Most visits take 20–40 minutes. More complex itineraries, special health situations, or first-time travelers with many questions may take a bit longer. We don't rush consultations - your physician will take the time needed to do this properly.

Do I need a consultation for a trip to Europe?

Most travelers to Western Europe don't need specific travel vaccines, but it's still worth reviewing your routine vaccines (MMR, Tdap, hepatitis B) and ensuring they're current. Eastern Europe and the Balkans have some additional considerations. If you have underlying health conditions or are going on an extended trip, a consultation is worthwhile.

Do you accept insurance?

We accept most major insurance plans. Coverage for travel vaccines and consultations varies by plan - call your insurer ahead of your visit to understand your benefits. Our staff can assist with billing questions and prior authorizations where needed.

Can I get prescriptions without a full consultation?

Prescriptions for malaria prophylaxis and other travel medications require a physician visit. We cannot prescribe these medications without reviewing your health history and itinerary, and both affect which medications are appropriate and safe for you.
