What to Expect
How soon before travel should I schedule a travel vaccine visit?
We recommend scheduling your visit at least 4–6 weeks before departure. Some vaccines require multiple doses spaced weeks apart, and others take time to reach full effectiveness. If your trip is sooner, contact us - we can often accommodate urgent and same-day appointments and will prioritize the most critical vaccines for your destination.
Do I need a Yellow Fever vaccine for my trip?
Yellow Fever vaccination is required for entry into many countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South America, and is recommended for travelers to certain regions even when not officially required. We are a certified Yellow Fever vaccination center and can advise whether it applies to your specific destination and issue the official International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) on-site.
Do I need malaria medicine for my trip?
Malaria risk varies significantly by destination, region within a country, season, and type of travel. Many popular destinations in Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia carry meaningful malaria risk. During your consultation, our physicians will assess your specific itinerary and recommend whether prophylaxis is appropriate, and which medication best fits your trip.
How do I get malaria medications and which is the best malaria medication to take?
Malaria medications require a prescription, which our physicians can provide at your travel consultation. The right medication depends on your destination, trip length, your health history, and personal tolerability. Common options include Atovaquone-Proguanil (Malarone), Doxycycline, and Mefloquine, each with different dosing schedules and side effect profiles. We will help you choose the option best suited to your trip.
What happens during a pre-travel consultation?
Your clinician will review your itinerary, planned activities, and health history to build a personalized travel health plan. Most visits take 20–40 minutes and cover recommended vaccines, malaria prevention, traveler's diarrhea, mosquito protection, altitude considerations, and destination-specific risks.
Do you see patients who have already returned from travel?
Yes. Our infectious disease specialist evaluates and treats post-travel illness, including tropical infections, parasitic diseases, fever of unknown origin, and other conditions acquired abroad. If you are unwell after returning from international travel, call us promptly.
